1968 Tour de France

The 1968 Tour de France was the 55th edition, held from 27 June to 21 July over 22 stages and 4,492 km, with eleven national teams of ten riders: three French, two Belgian, and one each from Germany, Spain, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands and a combined Switzerland/Luxembourg. Jan Janssen won the general classification by overtaking Herman Van Springel in the final time trial. The race finished at the Vélodrome de Vincennes for the first time, the Parc des Princes having hosted the finale from 1904 to 1967. After Tom Simpson's death doping controls became compulsory, riders were allowed to take on water during stages, two rest days were added, a combination classification was created, and the points jersey, green in every other year, was red for sponsorship reasons.
