1960 Tour de France
Nencini wins after Rivière's fall.
The 1960 Tour de France was the 47th edition, held from 26 June to 17 July over 21 stages and 4,173 km; 128 riders started and 81 finished. The Italian Gastone Nencini won. With Jacques Anquetil absent after winning the Giro d'Italia, Roger Rivière was the favourite, and halfway through he sat second behind Nencini with his speciality, the time trial, still to come; a career-ending crash on the fourteenth stage ended his challenge and Nencini won easily. The race was run with national teams: fourteen riders each from Spain, Belgium, France and Italy, eight-man teams from Switzerland/Luxembourg, the Netherlands, West Germany, Great Britain and the Internationals, and five regional teams. West Germany returned for the first time since 1938.
