1924 Tour de France
Bottecchia in yellow from start to finish, Italy's first Tour.
The 1924 Tour de France was the 18th edition and was won by Ottavio Bottecchia, the first Italian winner and the first rider to hold the yellow jersey from the first stage to the last. The race covered 5,425 km at 23.972 km/h and 60 of the 157 starters finished. The field included defending champion Henri Pélissier, Philippe Thys and the future winners Lucien Buysse and Nicolas Frantz. The time bonus for a stage win rose from two to three minutes, and it was the last year of the fifteen-stage format used since 1910. On the third stage Pélissier quit after a fresh quarrel with organiser Henri Desgrange; after the 1923 race he had predicted that Bottecchia would go on to win.
