1934 Tour de France
Magne's second Tour, Vietto's sacrifice and the first time trial.
The 1934 Tour de France was the 28th edition, held from 3 to 29 July over 23 stages and 4,470 km, and was won by Antonin Magne, the 1931 winner. The French team held the yellow jersey from start to finish and won most of the stages, every member of the team taking at least one. René Vietto won the mountains classification but is remembered more for sacrificing his own chances, handing first his front wheel and then his whole bicycle to team captain Magne. The race introduced the split stage and the individual time trial: the second half of stage 21 was the first time trial in Tour history.
