1930 Tour de France
National teams, yellow bicycles and the first publicity caravan: Leducq's year.
The 1930 Tour de France was the 24th edition, held from 2 to 27 July over 21 stages and 4,822 km, and the first run with national teams instead of trade teams. The format suited the French: six of them finished in the top ten, André Leducq won the overall classification, and Charles Pélissier, ninth, won eight stages. Henri Desgrange had failed to kill team tactics by removing sponsors in 1929, so he replaced the trade teams with five national teams, all on identical yellow bicycles, backed by 60 touriste-routiers; the manufacturers disliked losing their advertising. The publicity caravan appeared for the first time.
