1933 Tour de France
Speicher's Tour, and the birth of the mountains competition.
The 1933 Tour de France was the 27th edition, held from 27 June to 23 July over 23 stages and 4,395 km. It introduced the mountains competition, rewarding the fastest climbers with points for each summit; the Spaniard Vicente Trueba won it after reaching nine of the sixteen peaks first. The two-minute bonus for a stage win decided the race: thanks to it Georges Speicher won, whereas without it the Italian Giuseppe Martano would have. After the 1932 bonuses had turned a three-second gap into 24 minutes, only the stage winner now received bonus time. The route ran clockwise for the first time since 1913.
