1928 Tour de France
Frantz keeps yellow all the way, even on a borrowed women's bike.
The 1928 Tour de France was the 22nd edition, held from 17 June to 15 July over 22 stages and 5,376 km, and was won by Nicolas Frantz for the second time, holding the yellow jersey from start to finish. Three days from the end his bicycle failed between Metz and Charleville and he rode the last 100 km of the stage on an undersized women's bicycle, losing 28 minutes but keeping the lead; his Alcyon team won the team prize and took second and third. An Australian and New Zealand team rode for the first time, an experience later told in Phil Keoghan's 2016 film Le Ride. Henri Desgrange let teams replace exhausted or injured riders, an experiment that backfired and was quickly abandoned, and the team-start format returned with ten-minute gaps.
