Development

Songs of the Past was co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory, a studio founded in July 2015 by Jakub Rokosz, a former senior quest designer at CD Projekt Red who worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Fool's Theory had been tasked in 2022 with developing a remake of The Witcher (2007) in Unreal Engine 5, but work stalled due to technical dependencies shared with The Witcher IV. By the end of 2024, a portion of Fool's Theory was assigned to support The Witcher IV.

Reports of a third expansion emerged in June 2025 from Polish industry insider Borys Nieśpielak. In November 2025, CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz stated in a Q3 2025 earnings call that new content might release in the coming year and could impact financial results. Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski mentioned an additional project at Fool's Theory beyond the announced remake and support work. In December, Polish analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski reported that the expansion was being developed by Fool's Theory and that its release should kick off the marketing campaign for The Witcher IV, with a production budget of 52 million zł (ca. €12 million/US$14 million).

CD Projekt Red and Fool's Theory did not make significant gameplay changes, as The Witcher 3 had aged well and its mechanics remained relevant. Geralt receives a new weapon: a silver chain wrapped around his arm, deployable like a sign or bomb, which previously appeared in the intro cinematic for The Witcher (2007).

Release

Songs of the Past was announced on 27 May 2026, ten years after Blood and Wine's release. CD Projekt Red had planned to announce it on 28 May but accidentally revealed it early through the REDlauncher. Originally planned for 2026, it was delayed to 2027 to achieve the best possible result. On 21 July 2026, it was reported that the expansion would be revealed at Gamescom on 25 August.
