In the short story "A Question of Price" in The Last Wish, Geralt of Rivia claims the unborn Ciri through the Law of Surprise. Geralt is at the castle of Cintra for the betrothal celebration of Crown Princess Pavetta when Urcheon of Erlenwald claims her hand, promised to him by her father Roegner, whose life Urcheon had saved.

After Geralt and Eist Tuirseach defend Urcheon from the other suitors, he transforms into a man named Duny. Thanking Geralt for saving him, Duny offers him whatever he asks, and Geralt invokes the Law of Surprise, the same law that gave Duny his claim to Pavetta's hand. Pavetta reveals that she is pregnant, so Geralt has a right to claim the child. In The Lady of the Lake, Geralt recognizes Emperor Emhyr as Ciri's father, who married Pavetta under the name Duny.
