In The Witcher, a Source is a genetic magic prodigy, a person born with innate and potentially vast magical abilities. Ciri is a Source: in Blood of Elves it is Triss Merigold who eventually realizes this.

In the first The Witcher video game, Triss determines that the boy Alvin is a Source like Ciri; he is given a magical amulet meant to keep his abilities in check while he learns magic, and when frightened he uses his Source abilities to disappear magically. Jacques de Aldersberg explains that through his Source abilities he has seen the eventual extinction of humanity because of the White Frost.
