Lore & Background
Much of the book runs alongside the events of Winter's Heart. Reviewers noted how little the plot advances; SF Site nonetheless called it the most satisfying novel Jordan had produced since Lord of Chaos.
Perrin Aybara keeps trying to rescue his wife Faile from the Shaido Aiel, even torturing prisoners for information, and is offered an alliance with the Seanchan against them. Mat Cauthon tries to escape Seanchan territory while courting Tuon, the heir to the Seanchan leadership, and discovers that she is a sul'dam who could be taught to channel. Elayne Trakand works to secure the Lion Throne of Andor and is revealed to be expecting twins, with Rand's fatherhood kept secret. Rand sends Davram Bashere, Logain Ablar and Loial to negotiate a truce with the Seanchan, who accept but demand that the Dragon Reborn meet the Daughter of the Nine Moons. Egwene al'Vere leads the siege of Tar Valon and, after blocking its river port, is kidnapped by agents of the White Tower.
