Lore & Background
Kathleen, whose resistance has seized Kansas City, Missouri, is hunting Henry Burrell, whom she blames for her brother Michael's death. Henry and his young deaf brother Sam find Joel and Ellie, who agree to help them get out. Henry admits he had worked with FEDRA and that he betrayed Michael to get leukaemia medicine for Sam. The group uses the tunnels under the city, then gets pinned down by a sniper in a cul-de-sac, and Kathleen's people close in.
Most of the episode was shot in April 2022. A full set was built on an empty lot in nine weeks for its big action sequence, which took four weeks to film with about 70 actors in prosthetics. The episode introduced the "bloater", an infected much bigger and stronger than the rest. It drew 11.6 million viewers within three days, and its editors won the Emmy for Outstanding Picture Editing.
