Lore & Background
A flashback shows Ellie's mother, Anna, bitten while giving birth; Marlene and the Fireflies find them, and Anna asks Marlene to kill her and take Ellie to Boston. In the present, Joel and Ellie reach Salt Lake City, share a quiet moment with a herd of giraffes, and Joel speaks about the time after Sarah's death. Firefly soldiers ambush them and take Ellie. At the hospital Marlene tells Joel the doctors think Cordyceps has grown in Ellie's brain since birth, and Joel realises the operation would kill her.
The finale was filmed in May 2022 in Calgary and Grande Prairie, Alberta. Ashley Johnson, who played Ellie in the games, guest starred as Ellie's mother Anna, a story Druckmann had conceived for the games but never used. It drew 8.2 million viewers on its first day.
