Lore & Background

Three months after Henry's death, Joel and Ellie reach Wyoming, where an isolated couple warns them about the dangers further west and Joel, hearing Tommy may be dead, suffers a panic attack. A patrol led by Maria brings them into the community at Jackson, where Joel is reunited with his brother. Tommy will not join the trip to the Fireflies because Maria is pregnant. Joel confides his fears and asks Tommy to take Ellie instead; Ellie overhears, and in the argument that follows Joel tells her she is not his daughter.

It was filmed in November and December 2021, with the town of Canmore, Alberta, standing in for Jackson; buildings went up and businesses were dressed, including a 30-foot log wall across a main street. Žbanić said Jackson's working society reminded her of growing up in Sarajevo. The episode drew 7.8 million viewers on its first day, and Pedro Pascal submitted it for his Emmy nomination.
