Kvothe's service to the Maer in Vintas.
In The Wise Man's Fear Count Threpe arranges for Kvothe to sail to Severen in Vintas, to help the Maer Alveron court Meluan Lackless in hope of a writ of patronage.

Kvothe's songs and letters win the bride, and he uncovers and stops a plot to kill the Maer. He finds Denna in Severen, but they quarrel over a song she is writing. The Maer sends him with four mercenaries to hunt bandits in the Eld, which he does with sympathy, though their leader escapes. On his return the Maer's wife, who hates the Edema Ruh, has him dismissed, but the Maer pardons him, gives him a writ of performance and pays his university tuition for good.
