The massacre of Kvothe's troupe is the turning point of his childhood in The Name of the Wind. His father Arliden had been collecting tales of the Chandrian for a ballad about Lanre.
Lore & Background
While the troupe is camped, Kvothe's mother sends him to gather sage in the woods. When he comes back his parents and the whole troupe are dead, and the Chandrian are sitting round a campfire burning blue; they had come to silence Arliden and anyone he might have told. Cinder is about to kill the eleven-year-old when Lord Haliax makes them leave because some of their enemies are approaching.
