According to Kvothe's recounting, Lanre was once a celebrated hero of the Amyr who eventually became a renegade after the death of his beloved wife. He turned against the forces he had fought and destroyed the cities under his protection before changing his name to become Lord Haliax of the Chandrian. The group consists of seven members, including a member named Cinder whom Kvothe encountered in his youth. They coexist with the mortal world but operate from the shadows, often arriving at gatherings where they have been summoned by the discovery of their secrets. Their presence is marked by blue fire and an overwhelming silence that precedes death.

In Their Own Story

When Kvothe was eleven years old, he returned from gathering sage to find his parents and the entire Edema Ruh troupe dead around a campfire that had turned blue. The Chandrian were seated there, having come to silence Arliden for his research into their true history. Lord Haliax ordered them to depart only because mysterious enemies of theirs approached, sparing Kvothe's life in the process. Years later, while investigating reports of blue fire at a rural wedding, Kvothe discovered that the bride's father had unearthed an old pot painted with images of all seven Chandrian. The group returned to recover the pot and kill everyone who might have seen it, confirming that their violence is directly tied to protecting their secrecy.
