Background
It follows Auri through seven days in the Underthing, the old rooms and tunnels beneath the University, while she waits for a visit from Kvothe. Rothfuss has said it lacks a conventional plot; it describes one character's daily life and how her mind works. The story began as a planned contribution to the anthology Rogues, but Rothfuss gave that anthology a story about Bast instead and finished the Auri story in February 2013. It reached number two on the New York Times hardcover fiction list.
