Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Episodic Star Trek series set before The Original Series.
Last updated
It is the first Star Trek series since The Next Generation to feature the franchise's opening narration during its main credits.[1] The show uses episodic storytelling with a contemporary take on the 1960s designs of The Original Series.[1]
Making and release
Akiva Goldsman joined Star Trek: Discovery believing it was a prequel following Captain Pike, but was disappointed to find it was not.[2] Anson Mount was cast as Pike for Discovery's second season, and Rebecca Romijn was revealed to portray Number One in July 2018.[2] Mount, Romijn, and Peck were confirmed to be reprising their roles for the new series.[3] Because of Goldsman's urging, the Enterprise made its first appearance in the 2018 season-one finale of Discovery.[2]
The casting of Ethan Peck as Spock was made public in August 2018.[2] In May 2020, CBS All Access gave a series order to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.[3] Paramount+ confirmed a third season in March 2023 and a fourth in April 2024.[4]
What the cited sources add
Costume designer Bernadette Croft revealed that for the first time in Star Trek, actors get to choose their uniforms.[5] Croft said the medical blue color for Dr. M'Benga was 100 percent influenced by what "Bones wore on TOS".[5] Rebecca Romijn fought to make sure the old-school miniskirt was updated in a tasteful and gender-neutral way.[5] Executive producer Henry Alonso Myers said the goal was to do "Star Trek in the classic mode" with episodic adventures.[6]
Myers noted that the series explores current social and political issues, as all previous Star Trek projects had.[7] The Pantone colors for the uniforms are Chai Tea for gold, Duck Denim for blue, and Pomegranate for red, while medical blue is Blue Heaven.[8]
