The young adult animated series follows Kipo Oak, a teenage girl searching for her father after fleeing her burrow and exploring a post-apocalyptic surface world ruled by mutated animals.[1] Critics have praised the show's animation, voice acting, humor, world-building, music, characterization, design, action sequences, and diversity.[2] The show stands out for how it depicts LGBT individuals and people of color.[2]

Making and release

Radford Sechrist, who previously worked as a storyboard artist on Dan Vs. and later directed on Voltron: Legendary Defender, is the creator of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.[3] The Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June 2019 was where the animated series was initially revealed.[3] Besides showrunner Sechrist and executive producer Bill Wolkoff, the series employs five additional writers.[4] Studio Mir, located in South Korea, produced the animation using traditional techniques.[4]

DreamWorks employed roughly sixty individuals for the series, while Studio Mir employed about fifty-five.[4] On June 26, 2026, the series was taken off Netflix because the contract between DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix had ended.[5][6]

What the cited sources add

The same review noted that the music in the show was so stellar it inspired the creation of a Spotify playlist.[7] Polygon reported that Benson's coming out scene in episode 6 is "one of the most chill coming out scenes in all-ages programming".[8] The Polygon article stated that Kipo does this for the first time in animation, with an understated scene that makes it particularly noteworthy.[8] Den of Geek's analysis noted that the leads in Kipo are Black, a rarity in television, particularly in animation.[9]

The same article observed that Kipo herself is already mixed-raced, with a Black father and an Asian mother.[9] ScreenRant reported that as of May 2026, the series holds a 100% critic score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.[6]
