Beacon 23

Two strangers trapped at the end of the known universe.

Last updated

The narrative centers on Aster and Halan, two individuals whose destinies become linked when they are confined together at the universe's edge.[1][2]

Making and release

Initial development of the series was announced in 2018.[3] Lena Headey was announced as the main actress in March 2021, followed by Stephan James being cast as her co-star in September 2021.[3][4] Filming was originally planned to start in Toronto during 2021, but due to several postponements, it eventually commenced on April 19, 2022.[5][6] Daniel Percival served as the director for the first episode.[5]

The initial season completed its filming in November 2022, and the show moved directly into filming the second season without a break.[7][2] The show made its US debut on MGM+ on November 12, 2023.[8] MGM+ decided to end the series after two seasons in September 2024.[9][10][11]

What the cited sources add

A Deadline article from August 2022 reported that Glen Mazzara and Joy Blake would take over as new executive producers and co-showrunners for season two.[2] The same article noted that Zak Penn’s attention was on completing season one due to the overlap of production.[2] A moviesr.net article stated that Beacon 23 filmed at the same location where "The Expanse" filmed its fifth and sixth seasons.[6] That article also reported that after a nine-month exclusive run for Spectrum, the series would become an AMC original with a second window across AMC Networks platforms.[6][4]

A TVLine article from February 2024 quoted Michael Wright, head of MGM+, praising the creative team for bringing Hugh Howey's book to life.[12] A TVLine article from September 2024 reported that the series streamed for two seasons totaling 16 episodes.[11]
