The show has an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 73 out of 100.[1] Commander Michael Burnham's actions ignite a conflict between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire, with the narrative set roughly a decade prior to the events depicted in Star Trek: The Original Series.[2] CBS All Access was the first streaming service to have a Star Trek series developed specifically for it, and this show was the first new Star Trek television series after the 2005 conclusion of Star Trek: Enterprise.[3]

Making and release

On November 2, 2015, CBS announced a new Star Trek series would premiere in January 2017, following the 50th anniversary of The Original Series.[3] Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin were set as executive producers, and CBS believed Star Trek could "put All Access on the map"[3] Bryan Fuller, who previously wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager, was announced as showrunner and co-creator in February 2016.[4] Fuller announced the title Star Trek: Discovery in July 2016 and confirmed it would be set in the "Prime Timeline"[5]

CBS asked Fuller to step down as showrunner in October 2016, and Berg and Harberts became sole showrunners.[6][7] CBS wanted a single serialized show, but Fuller's initial concept was for an anthology series where each season would take place in a distinct time period.[7][8] A second season, which has 13 episodes, was officially commissioned in October 2017.[9]

What the cited sources add

Fuller's original pitch to CBS was for multiple serialized anthology shows that would journey through the eras of Kirk and Picard and beyond, which he compared to what American Horror Story did for horror.[7] The series overran its projected $6 million-per-episode budget, and Fuller's attention was split between Discovery and his other series American Gods.[7] Fuller wanted the lead character to be called "Number One" in honor of Majel Barrett's character from the original pilot.[10] Costume designer Gersha Phillips stated that the mandate from Fuller was to look at what Star Trek had done in the past and try to do something better.[11]

A navy blue color, custom-mixed for the show, was used for the fabric of Starfleet uniforms that was specially dyed in Switzerland.[12]
