Star Trek: Short Treks

Stand-alone shorts exploring characters and ideas from Star Trek: Discovery.

Last updated

Short Treks are brief episodes within the Star Trek franchise that were released in the intervals between seasons of the series Star Trek: Discovery.[1][2] These short episodes were intended to provide self-contained narratives and simultaneously offer hints about upcoming Star Trek: Discovery episodes.[3]

Making and release

In June 2018, Alex Kurtzman signed a five-year deal with CBS Television Studios to expand the Star Trek franchise, and a month later he announced Short Treks at San Diego Comic-Con.[1] Three of those initial shorts focused on Discovery characters: Silvia Tilly, Saru, and Harry Mudd.[4] A third season was reportedly ordered in January 2020, but no further shorts had begun production by July of that year.[5] A subsequent group of shorts was made available in the period after Discovery's second season concluded and before the debut of Star Trek: Picard's first season.[2]

During the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Kurtzman revealed that the second season would consist of four live-action shorts plus two that were animated.[6] The animated shorts featured a visual approach that was distinct from the animation style seen in the series Lower Decks.[7][8]

What the cited sources add

Giacchino asked to add eyes and a mouth to the tardigrade character model so she could express emotions.[9] The short "Ephraim and Dot" recreates scenes from several classic Star Trek episodes and films.[9] The story is based on an actual African legend, but Schulze embellished it with alien beings from Michael Burnham's imagination.[10][11] The short "Q&A" was written by Michael Chabon and features Spock and Number One stuck in an elevator.[8]

Michael Giacchino both directed and composed the music for the animated short "Ephraim and Dot", aiming to make it feel like a Tom and Jerry cartoon that takes place aboard the Enterprise.[12][13][14]
