Star Trek: The Original Series
Set in the 23rd century, it follows the USS Enterprise crew.

Gene Roddenberry created the American science fiction television program Star Trek, which chronicles the journeys of a starship and its personnel.[1] To set it apart from the larger media franchise it originated, the show was later given the retroactive title Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS).[1] The franchise that grew out of this series includes 13 television shows, 14 movies, and a vast array of books, games, and toys.[2]
Making and release
NBC canceled the show after three seasons and 79 episodes due to low Nielsen ratings.[3] In his initial draft, Roddenberry described the proposed program as "Wagon Train to the stars".[4] From January 1968 until June 1969, Paramount Television handled the show's production.[3] Viewers in the United Kingdom first saw the series on BBC One on July 12, 1969, a date that coincided with the Apollo 11 mission.[5]
What the cited sources add
The Huffington Post article by Lee Speigel notes that Nichelle Nichols was given a three-page script with characters named Bones, Kirk, and Spock, and asked if she would read for the role of Spock.[6][7] The same article indicates that Gene Roddenberry had insisted that the characters of Bones McCoy and Spock be played by male actors during the casting process.[6][8] The TrekMovie.com "TOS Remastered" page indicates that "Balance of Terror" was the initial remastered episode made available for syndication during the weekend that began September 16, 2006.[9][10] The "TOS Remastered" page mentions that, even though the show was remastered in high definition, CBS provided the syndication broadcast package in Standard Definition.[9][10]
