Skyland is an animated television series co-produced by France, Canada, and Luxembourg.[1] The story follows siblings Mahad and Lena who join a pirate rebellion against the Sphere's dictatorship.[1] The Sphere controls water supplies and maintains power through trained Guardians.[1]
Making and release
In May 2004, 9 Story Entertainment joined as a co-producer, making it a French/Canadian co-production.[2] The first part of animation was done by Attitude Studios in Paris, with facial animation and rendering outsourced to DQ Entertainment in India.[3] Paul Intson composed the music, and Jim Longo handled sound design and 5.1 surround mix.[4] The initial concept for Skyland was developed by Emmanuel Gorinstein during 2000, with the original plan being an adult-oriented animated show.[5]
A September 2002 announcement revealed the project as a series blending CGI, traditional animation, and stop-motion techniques.[6] Method Films was the studio that commissioned the series, while Millimages took on the role of distributing it globally.[6] By 2002, the target audience for the series had been shifted to children and teenagers aged 9 to 14.[6] A distribution agreement with Nicktoons allowed the show to be broadcast in the US.[2]
On November 26, 2005, a 60-minute preview episode was broadcast worldwide.[7] For later episodes, the final animation and completion work was done by DQ Entertainment, who utilized motion capture data that had been recorded at Attitude Studios.[8]
