The pygmy snapper (Lutjanus maxweberi) is a ray-finned fish from the snapper family Lutjanidae. It lives in the western Pacific Ocean and has only been recorded in fresh and brackish waters, making it one of the few snappers that stays away from the sea.

This species was first scientifically described in 1921 by Dutch ichthyologist Canna Maria Louise Popta. She based it on a specimen collected from Muna Island, off Sulawesi, during the Siboga expedition. Popta originally wrote the genus as *Lutianus* and the species name as *max weberi*, but these are now considered spelling errors. The name honors Max Weber, the Dutch ichthyologist who led the expedition.

The pygmy snapper has a fairly deep body, with its standard length measuring 2.2 to 2.7 times the body’s deepest point. Its forehead slopes steeply, and the notch and knob on its preopercle are not strongly developed. The teeth on the vomer form a crescent or triangular patch without a rear extension, and its tongue lacks teeth. The dorsal fin has 10 spines and 13 soft rays, while the anal fin has 3 spines and 8 soft rays. Both the dorsal and anal fins are rounded or only slightly angular at the rear. The pectoral fins have 16 rays, and the tail fin is slightly forked. Juveniles are whitish with four dark brown to blackish stripes running along their sides. Adults are plain brown on the back and sides, with whitish undersides. The largest known standard length is 15 cm (5.9 in).

The pygmy snapper has been found in the Philippines, Sulawesi, and New Guinea. Juveniles inhabit mangrove-lined inlets, brackish waters, and freshwater streams. Where adults live remains unknown.

Little is known about the biology of this fish. It has been observed in small groups.
