Lore & Background
In Citizen Sleeper, the player character is a 'Sleeper'—a human whose mind has been digitized and placed into a robot body controlled by the Essen-Arp corporation. The Sleeper has escaped indentured servitude on a freighter and arrived at a space station called the Eye, originally owned by the Solheim corporation before its collapse decades ago left the station in anarchy. A trade union called Havenage rose to become the leading power, controlling the station alongside a criminal gang known as Yatagan. The Sleeper is discovered by a scrap merchant named Dragos, who provides shelter and work until fear of reprisal from Essen-Arp causes him to cut ties. The game uses a cycle-based day/night system, and the player can pursue several independent plot lines involving characters such as Sabine, Feng, Ethan, Lem, Ankhita, and Bliss.
Reader's Guide
Citizen Sleeper is significant for its focus on systemic storytelling and player-driven narrative within a science-fiction setting of corporate exploitation and survival. The game's multiple endings—ranging from escaping the station on a generation ship to confronting the corporate forces behind the Sleeper project—emphasize choice and consequence. Its portrayal of a digitized consciousness fighting planned obsolescence and indentured servitude resonates with themes of labor, autonomy, and resistance. The sequel, Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, released on 31 January 2025, continues the narrative. The game's legacy lies in its tight integration of resource management, faction politics, and character-driven plots, offering a compact but dense role-playing experience that rewards exploration and relationship-building.
