Dragon's Dogma 2
A sequel set in a parallel world, expanding on its predecessor's mechanics.
In 2024, Capcom released *Dragon's Dogma 2*, an action role-playing game that continues the story of its 2012 predecessor. The game takes place in a fantasy world that runs parallel to the first game's setting. Players control a customizable hero known as the "Arisen," who is marked by a dragon and must hunt it down. The journey unfolds across an open world, with quests, monster fights, and a geopolitical struggle between two kingdoms. The Arisen is aided by AI-controlled allies called "Pawns," who fight, give advice, and guide the player. Each player can create their own Arisen and a personal Pawn, choosing gender, appearance, and race, and can recruit two more Pawns made by other players.
The game uses a class system called "vocations," which determine combat abilities and equipment. Vocations are split into basic, advanced, and hybrid types, with hybrids available only to the Arisen. Only the Arisen and their main Pawn can change vocations. Returning vocations from the first game include the Thief and Archer, replacing the Strider and Ranger. New hybrid vocations include the Mystic Spearhand, which uses a bladed quarterstaff called a duospear, and the Trickster, who confuses enemies and boosts Pawns. Improving a vocation unlocks new abilities.
The seamless open world is four times larger than the first game's map and is a parallel world to it. It is split into two kingdoms: Vermund, populated by humans, and Battahl, home to catlike beings and elves. Fast travel uses ferrystones and oxcarts, and players can set up camps at night. Emergent events, destructible environments, and a day-night cycle affect which creatures appear and how strong they are.
The story begins in a mining site, where the player character, mistaken for a Pawn, is forced to clear rubble. After an attack, a figure called the Pathfinder helps the player escape and reveals they are the Arisen. A flashback shows the player fighting the dragon in the ruined town of Melve, where they were chosen. The Arisen is the only one who can summon Pawns and slay the dragon, after which they become king of Vermund until the dragon returns. Many people pretend to be Arisen, and since a coronation is near, the player is seen as a pretender. Soldiers escort them to the capital, Vernworth, where palace guard captain Brant believes the player is real and the regent-to-be is an impostor.

Lore & Background
Dragon's Dogma 2 is set in a seamless open world four times larger than the first game's map, split between two major kingdoms: Vermund and Battahl. The world is populated with humans, catlike beastren, and elves. The story begins in a mining site where the player character, assumed to be a Pawn, is forced to clear rubble. After an attack, the player escapes with the help of a mysterious figure called the Pathfinder, who reveals the player is the Arisen. The Arisen is the only person able to summon and command Pawns and slay the Dragon, after which they become king of Vermund until they die and the Dragon returns. Many people pretend to be Arisen, and the player is initially assumed to be a pretender. The plot involves a false Arisen, a substance called Godsway (crystallized souls of former Arisen that can mentally control Pawns), and a former Arisen named Rothais who slew the Dragon but grew mad with paranoia. The game offers multiple endings, including one where the player can break the cycle by using the Godsbane Blade on themselves, leading to a world without the cycle that approaches its end.
Reader's Guide
Dragon's Dogma 2 was directed by Hideaki Itsuno, with a main goal of introducing improvements to the gameplay mechanics of its predecessor and including features cut due to technology not being readily available at the time. The game features a vocation system split between basic, advanced, and hybrid classes, with the latter only accessible to the Arisen. New hybrid vocations include Mystic Spearhand and Trickster. Fast travel is available through ferrystones and oxcarts, and players can set up camps at night. Emergent events and a day–night cycle impact creature encounters and difficulty. The game received generally positive reviews from critics and sold 4 million units by November 2025. A version with additional content, Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, is scheduled for release on October 9, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
