Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream
A turn-based RPG set in a parallel world between two Mysterious games.
Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream is a turn-based role-playing game from Gust, released in February 2022 on Windows via Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4. It is the twenty-third title in the Atelier series and the fourth in the Mysterious subseries. The story takes place between the events of *Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book* and *Atelier Firis: The Alchemist and the Mysterious Journey*. It marks only the second time the series has brought back a main character from a prior game, following *Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy*.
In battle, players control a party that can grow to six characters. Three fight in the front row while three provide support from the rear. Each turn, the player picks an action for each front-line character. Attacking builds Technical Points (TP), which can be spent on defensive moves—like swapping a support member in to block an attack—or on linked "Twin Attacks" between a front-row character and their support partner. If the front team is knocked out, the backup squad takes over. Damage types vary and are more effective against specific elemental or other weaknesses, and actions also include buffs, debuffs, and healing. This two-team battle system is similar to the one seen in *Atelier Lydie & Suelle*.
Outside of combat, the main story progresses alongside optional sidequests. A bulletin board in the town of Roytale offers tasks like defeating monsters or finding rare items, with rewards for completion. Each party member also has a personal storyline the player can pursue; finishing these raises their Friendship with Sophie and unlocks bonuses.
Exploration relies on special gems that change the weather. Using a rain gem, for example, can make barrels float so Sophie can skip across them, while a snowy gem freezes water into platforms. These gems have limited charges and must be refilled through alchemy. They can only be used at altars matching the correct weather type. A new gathering mechanic appears as well: some glowing spots trigger a minigame that can yield better versions of materials.
The alchemy system follows the basic structure of earlier Mysterious games but adds new mechanics.

Lore & Background
Atelier Sophie 2 follows the alchemist Sophie Neuenmuller after the events of the first game. While traveling with Plachta, who is still in a doll's body, they are pulled into a mysterious black void near a strange tree. Sophie awakens alone in the city of Roytale, located in the parallel world of Erde Wiege, created by the goddess Elvira and inhabited by individuals chosen across multiple time periods. There she meets a younger version of Plachta who has not yet lost her human body, as well as a young version of her late grandmother, Ramizel Erlenmeyer, who serves as the unofficial mayor of Roytale.
The game's story involves Sophie searching for the original Plachta, whose soul was separated from her doll body upon arrival in Erde Wiege. Sophie eventually locates and reattaches the soul. Later, the party investigates a new breed of monsters called 'Groll' that attack Dream Cores, magical stones that act as cornerstones to Erde Wiege, turning citizens apathetic. The game features six playable characters, including the merchant Alette, the bodyguard Olias, and the former knight Diebold.
Reader's Guide
Atelier Sophie 2 is notable as the second game in the Atelier series to feature a returning protagonist, following Atelier Ryza 2. Its turn-based combat divides the party into three front-line members and three support members, with Technical Points (TP) enabling actions such as Support Guard and Twin Attacks. The alchemy system uses a Recipe Tree for discovering new items, with synthesis performed on a square grid where materials' components are placed to unlock abilities. Weather-altering gems introduce puzzle elements to exploration, allowing traversal changes such as floating boxes during rain or frozen platforms in snow. The game also includes a gathering minigame for improved materials. Sidequests are available via a bulletin board in Roytale, and completing character-specific storylines increases Friendship with Sophie and unlocks bonuses. The game's alchemy system retains the basic structure of previous Mysterious games while adding new mechanics like link components and assist skills triggered by party members.
