Lore & Background

Darkest Dungeon II is set some time after the temporary defeat of the Heart of Darkness. A scientist known as the Scholar begins experimenting with an Eldritch force called the Iron Crown, but the experiments go awry, causing a planetary realignment that drives most of humanity mad and allows Eldritch beings to invade the physical world. The Scholar finds himself trapped in an eternal cycle of repeating events. His mentor, the Academic, approaches him with the flame of Hope and instructs him that the only way to undo the damage is to bring Hope to the Mountain where the Iron Crown is kept and come to terms with his mistakes.

The Scholar recruits a band of surviving heroes and guides them on a dangerous trek to the Mountain, fighting bandits, cultists, and beasts. The journey must be repeated every time the party fails or succeeds in destroying the Eldritch monster residing in the Mountain. Along the way, the Scholar learns about the troubled pasts and motivations of the heroes. Eventually, the Scholar and the heroes confront the final Eldritch monster, the Body of Work, and over the course of the battle come to terms with their pasts and overcome their guilt. The Body of Work is defeated, and the Scholar uses the flame of Hope to gain control of the Iron Crown, undoing the damage it caused. The heroes help survivors rebuild, though the Academic cautions that Eldritch forces remain in the universe and will return if humanity's resolve falters.

Reader's Guide

Darkest Dungeon II builds on the core combat system of its predecessor while offering a completely different metagame experience. The player commands a stagecoach to navigate a world overtaken by evil, with the ultimate goal of reaching a mountain that is the source of that evil. Combat is turn-based, and heroes must be positioned properly as some skills cannot be used from the wrong spot. Stress levels increase as characters progress; high stress can cause debilitating meltdowns during combat, resulting in health loss and negative traits. Stress also affects relationships between characters: friendly relationships grant gameplay perks, while hostile relationships may cause one hero to block another's skills and increase stress. The player can visit a Hospital to remove bad traits, and at inns they can lower stress and improve team dynamics, though staying at an inn increases Loathing, a stat representing the world's all-consuming evil. The flame on the stagecoach represents the team's hope, and penalties apply when it is nearly extinguished. When a run ends, Profile rank increases, unlocking new characters and items for subsequent runs. A free update titled Kingdoms, introduced in January 2025, adds a new campaign and three enemy factions, blending permanence and roster management from the original Darkest Dungeon with the traversal and combat of Darkest Dungeon II.
