The Institute operates on a rigid hierarchy where students are assigned to Houses based on their performance and potential, such as House Mars or House Minerva. Each House is given a castle within the simulation and must capture the standards of other Houses to enslave their students, forcing them into obedience. The environment is controlled by Proctors who observe from afar but interfere when necessary; for instance, Fitchner revealed that ArchGovernor Nero Augustus was bribing officials to ensure his son, Adrius, known as "the Jackal," would win. The stakes are lethal: during the initial "Passage," students pair off and fight barehanded until one kills the other. Darrow killed Cassius's brother, Julian, in this first test. Later, when House Mars fractured into factions, the bloodthirsty Titus raped enslaved peers before being sentenced to death by Darrow and executed by Cassius. The simulation allows for complex political maneuvering, as seen when Darrow manipulated House Minerva led by "Mustang" (Virginia) to defeat Titus.

In Their Own Story

Darrow entered the Institute under the fabricated identity of "Darrow au Andromedus," quickly earning the nickname "Reaper" for his use of a scythe. He was drafted into House Mars, where he befriended Cassius and Roque but faced immediate treachery from Titus. As the conflict escalated, Darrow orchestrated an alliance with Mustang's House Minerva to crush Titus's faction, only to sentence Titus to death to maintain his cover. Tensions peaked when the Jackal revealed via video that Darrow had killed Julian, prompting Cassius to duel and stab Darrow, leaving him for dead while usurping control of House Mars. Mustang rescued the wounded Darrow in a forest cave, where they developed romantic feelings despite the chaos. While recovering, Darrow learned that Fitchner was corrupt and that the Jackal had rigged the competition. United by survival, Darrow and Mustang freed slaves using House Minerva's standard, amassing an army to conquer Houses Ceres and Apollo. In a climactic confrontation at "Olympus," the Proctors' base, Darrow slayed Proctor Apollo after they kidnapped Mustang, eventually capturing the Proctors themselves. Although Cassius abdicated his leadership of House Mars due to their blood feud, Darrow secured victory when Mustang delivered her twin brother, the Jackal, to him.
