Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran, situated in the southwest of the country within Iran's Region 2. Its capital is the city of Yasuj. The province covers an area of 15,563 square kilometers. It shares borders with five other provinces: Isfahan and Fars to the east, Bushehr to the south, Khuzestan to the west, and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari to the north. The terrain is predominantly mountainous, forming part of the Zagros range. The highest point is the Dena summit, which reaches an elevation of 5,109 meters. The Dena mountain range itself, rising to 4,000 meters, is located within the province and is covered with oak forests. Another notable peak is Khamin (or Khami) Mountain, found in Gachsaran County. The population has grown steadily across recent national censuses. In 2006, the province recorded 621,428 inhabitants living in 125,779 households. By 2011, the population had increased to 658,629 people across 156,176 households. The most recent census, in 2016, measured the population at 713,052 residents in 186,320 households. Over 55 percent of the province’s population, or 397,461 individuals, resides in urban areas as of the 2016 census. The province is home to several institutions of higher education, including the University of Yasuj, the Islamic Azad University of Gachsaran, and the Yasuj University of Medical Sciences.
