Gameplay

Combat in Crimson Gem Saga is turn-based, with a notable ambush system. On the field map, contact between the player's icon and a monster icon triggers battle. If the player touches a monster facing away, the party gains a combined preliminary attack. If a monster displays a "!" symbol and contacts the player after it disappears, the enemy may launch a preemptive combined attack. The game includes weapon and skill customization, plus combination attacks involving two to four party members.

Reception

The game received mixed to positive reviews, with GameRankings and Metacritic scores of 79.02% and 78 out of 100 for the PSP version, and 69.75% and 70 out of 100 for the iOS version. Many reviewers noted it follows the RPG formula well without being particularly innovative, and praised the writing and voice acting. GameSpot was more critical, calling the game simple and uninspired. The iOS version was released on August 3, 2010, and appeared in several App Store categories, but has not been updated for years and no longer functions on current iOS.
