Scheffler was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and moved to Dallas, Texas, at age six. He played golf and basketball at Highland Park High School, winning three consecutive individual state titles. He won the 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur and made his PGA Tour debut as an amateur at the 2014 HP Byron Nelson Championship. He played college golf for the Texas Longhorns, winning the Western Intercollegiate and Big 12 Individual Championship in 2015. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2018 with a degree in finance. He turned professional in 2018 and earned his Web.com Tour card through qualifying school in December 2018.
