Lowry played for the Irish teams which won the European Amateur Team Championship in both 2007 and 2008. He has represented Europe at the Ryder Cup in 2021, 2023, and 2025; Lowry holed the decisive putt at the latter event. He made a hole in one at the 2026 Masters Tournament.

The fourteenth hole at Royal Portrush, final round, 2019. The gallery is a wall of green and white, two hundred thousand voices compressed into a single sustained hum. Lowry lines up a mid-iron approach, the ball sitting on a fringe that looks deceptively soft. He swings, and the ball draws left, settling twenty feet from the pin with a break that looks, to anyone watching, like a putt you simply do not make. He taps it. The ball rolls. The flagstick trembles. And then Lowry's hands come apart, his mouth opens, and the sound that comes out is not a cheer, not a yell — it is a howl, raw and animal, the kind of noise a person makes when something they have carried for twenty years finally sets down its weight. The crowd detonates. Somewhere in the stands, a man in a green cap is sobbing. Lowry does not see him. Lowry is already walking toward the next hole, still vibrating, still loud, the flagstick in his hand like a sceptre he did not ask for but will not give back.

Reader's Guide

Born in the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar, County Westmeath, Ireland, Lowry grew up in Clara, County Offaly. He is the son of Brendan Lowry, who won the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final with Offaly. Lowry learned his early golf at Esker Hills Golf Club. He attended Athlone Institute of Technology as a scholarship student on the Higher Certificate in Sport and Recreation. Lowry turned professional in 2009, the week after his Irish Open win. He won the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush by six shots. He won the BMW PGA Championship in 2022.
