Smith was born in Brisbane, Queensland, and grew up in the northern suburb of Bray Park where he attended Pine Rivers State High School. He began playing golf at age two at Wantima Country Club. He turned professional in 2013 and played on the PGA Tour of Australasia and Asian Tour before joining the PGA Tour. He won his first PGA Tour event in 2017 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with partner Jonas Blixt. In 2022, he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a record 34 under par, The Players Championship, and the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews. He joined LIV Golf in August 2022.

The 18th green at Augusta, late April. The air smells of azaleas and damp clay. Smith lines up his approach, the crowd a low hum behind the rope. He doesn't rush. He never rushes. The ball floats out, lands soft, stops. A three-foot putt. He taps it with the same casual firmness he'd use on a practice green, and the cup swallows it clean. His caddie nods, just once, and the two of them walk off the green as the roar behind them swells into something almost architectural in its volume. Smith's face is unreadable. He has done this before, in his mind, a hundred times. The trophy will wait. The next round is already in his head.
