Lore & Background
Woods only emerged to lead the tournament in the final round, when Francesco Molinari, who had been leading the tournament, hit his ball into the water on the 12th hole and then again on the 15th after hitting a tree. It was the first time Woods won a major when not leading after the 54th hole. At age 43, he became the eleventh oldest player to win a major, and the second oldest Masters winner, only bettered by Jack Nicklaus who won at age 46. It was 11 years after his last major win, the 2008 U.S. Open, and 14 years after his last Masters win, beating the previous record of 13 years held by Gary Player.
Reader's Guide
Woods shot rounds of 70, 68, 67, and 70 for a total of 275 (−13). His first-round score was 70, not 74. His final score was 275 (−13), not 273 (−15). He was not the oldest Masters champion; Jack Nicklaus was 46 when he won in 1986. The record did not fall to Rory McIlroy in 2025, as McIlroy has not won the Masters as of 2025. Woods' caddie for the 2019 Masters was Joe LaCava, not Steve Williams.
