Demigod Origins in the Percy Jackson universe describe children born from the union of a Greek god and a mortal human. These individuals are central to the series and are at risk of being found by monsters because of their demigod status. The gods occasionally father children with mortals, though Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades swore an oath after World War II not to do so again because their offspring were too powerful. Despite this pledge, Percy Jackson is revealed to be the son of Poseidon. They are drawn into the struggle to stop the Titans, led by Kronos, from destroying the world.

In the mid-2000s setting of the series, Greek gods exist in the modern world but hide their true nature. Demigods have an inherent capacity to read Ancient Greek and inborn 'battlefield reflexes'; Percy himself was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. On the way to Camp Half-Blood, Percy and his mother are attacked by the Minotaur, which seemingly kills her. In fact Hades teleported Sally to the Underworld during the Minotaur's attack.

She returns home from Hades' realm at the end of the summer. To survive, many are sent to Camp Half-Blood on Long Island, New York, a training facility protected by magical boundaries. The history of these children is tied to the Great Prophecy regarding a child of one of the "Big Three" gods—Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades—who would determine whether Olympus falls or is saved. In the series' continuity, World War II was a conflict among the children of the Big Three, who then swore not to father any more children.
