In the mid-2000s setting of the series, Greek gods exist in the modern world but hide their true nature. When a god and mortal have a child, that demigod inherits enhanced strength, speed, or domain-specific magic. However, this lineage makes them targets; monsters are drawn to their scent, leading to attacks like the one by the Minotaur that killed Percy Jackson's mother, Sally Jackson. To survive, many are sent to Camp Half-Blood on Long Island, New York, a training facility protected by magical boundaries. The history of these children is tied to the Great Prophecy regarding a child of one of the "Big Three" gods—Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades—who would determine whether Olympus falls or is saved. World War II itself was a conflict among their offspring, prompting the oath against further children.

In Their Own Story

Percy Jackson, a twelve-year-old boy with ADHD and dyslexia, learns he is the son of Poseidon after an attack by the Minotaur causes his mother's disappearance in Montauk. He travels to Camp Half-Blood where he meets Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood, a satyr guardian. Zeus suspects Percy stole his Master Bolt, forcing him on a quest to the Underworld with his friends. There they discover Luke Castellan, son of Hermes, is the true thief working for Kronos to resurrect the Titans. After confronting Hades and escaping, Percy returns home in summer's end to find his mother safe. Later quests involve rescuing Artemis from Atlas, where Bianca di Angelo sacrifices herself, and navigating Daedalus's Labyrinth to stop Luke's army before the Battle of Olympus.
