The search for Hades' Helm of Darkness is part of Percy Jackson's first quest, in The Lightning Thief. Percy is sent to find Zeus's stolen Master Bolt, and Hades is believed to be the culprit. When Percy, Annabeth and Grover reach Hades's realm, Hades reveals that his Helm of Darkness has also been stolen and accuses Percy of stealing it.

The quest reveals that the artifact was actually stolen by Luke Castellan, who was manipulated by Kronos, and that Ares was not an ally of Luke but rather a pawn in Kronos's scheme.
