Samuel Lubkin

Samuel Lubkin (1906–1972) was a mathematician and computer scientist who played a key role in early computing. He studied mathematics at Cooper Union in New York City, where he served as president of the Mathematics Club during the 1923–1924 academic year, and later earned a PhD in applied mathematics from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. At the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School of Electrical Engineering, he worked on the design of the ENIAC computer. He then joined the U.S. Army’s Ballistic Research Laboratory, collaborating with other ENIAC designers on the programming system for the EDVAC computer. Lubkin authored the “Operating Manual for the EDVAC,” which was described as “the bible of the computer industry in the late 1940s and early 1950s.” After that, he joined the team building the first UNIVAC computer. In the 1940s, Reeves Instrument Corporation hired Lubkin to lead a project designing their first digital computer. When Reeves shifted focus to analog computers—leading to the Reeves Electronic Analog Computer series—Lubkin left for a position in the digital computer division of the National Bureau of Standards (later renamed the National Institute of Standards and Technology). The bureau essentially hired Lubkin to replicate his design for the EDVAC, and this would go on to become the bureau's SEAC computer. Within a few months, Lubkin left the bureau and co-founded the Electronic Computer Corporation with Murray Pfefferman, a member of the SEAC design team. Lubkin served as president. The company was based in Brooklyn, New York, where his extended family lived. Despite being a new enterprise, it hired several experienced engineers from companies like the Eckert–Mauchly Computer Corporation, as many Jewish scientists and engineers were losing their security clearance—and defense jobs—due to the House Un-American Activities Committee, which sometimes equated Jewish heritage with Communist sympathies. Notable employees included Evelyn Berezin. The company’s main product was the ELECOM 100, a “low cost” (for its time) digital computer using vacuum tubes and drum memory. It was the first computer to operate with magnetic tape data storage as a separate peripheral. The machine measured 10 feet wide, 6 feet high, and 2 feet deep, not including the operator’s desk or space for peripherals.

In 1962, he founded Digital Electronics Inc., focusing on custom data conversion equipment and test gear, and became embroiled in litigation with cofounders.
