Jim Keller, an American microprocessor engineer, has made his mark at companies like AMD, Apple, and Tesla. His career kicked off at DEC in 1982, where he worked on processors like the VAX 8800 and Alpha 21164 and 21264 until 1998. Before that, he had a stint at Harris Corporation building microprocessor boards. At AMD in 1998, he helped launch the Athlon (K7) and led the K8 architecture. He left in 1999 for SiByte, designing MIPS-based chips for high-speed networking, then stayed on as chief architect after Broadcom bought the company in 2000. In 2004, he became VP of Engineering at P.A. Semi, a low-power chip firm. When Apple acquired P.A. Semi in 2008, Keller joined Apple, where his team developed the A4 and A5 processors used in iPhones and iPads.

Returning to AMD in 2012, Keller spearheaded the Zen and K12 microarchitectures, helping AMD compete again with Intel. He left in September 2015. Next, he joined Tesla in early 2016 as VP of Autopilot Hardware Engineering. At Intel from April 2018, he served as Senior VP until June 2020, resigning over a reported dispute about outsourcing production. He became CTO of AI startup Tenstorrent in December 2020, then CEO in January 2023. In 2023, he co-founded Atomic Semi with Sam Zeloof to make low-cost fabrication tools.

Keller is married to Bonnie, sister of Canadian author and psychologist Jordan Peterson.
