Harry Douglas Huskey (January 19, 1916 – April 9, 2017) helped shape early computing. Born in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains and raised in Idaho, he was the first in his family to go to college, earning a bachelor’s in math and physics from the University of Idaho, then a master’s and a PhD from Ohio State University in 1943. While teaching Navy students mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania, he began part-time work on the ENIAC and EDVAC computers in 1945—his first real exposure to computing, as his New York Times obituary noted.

He spent a year at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory, collaborating with Alan Turing on the Pilot ACE, and also contributed to the EDVAC and SEAC projects. From 1949 to 1953, at the National Bureau of Standards in Los Angeles, he designed and oversaw construction of the SWAC. Later, for Bendix Aviation, he created the G-15—a 950-pound machine that one person could operate. He kept one at home; it now resides in the Smithsonian.

After five years at the Bureau, Huskey joined UC Berkeley’s faculty in 1954, then moved to UC Santa Cruz in 1966, where he co-founded the computer and information science program in 1967 and directed the computer center. He became professor emeritus in 1986. At Berkeley, he supervised Niklaus Wirth’s PhD research (completed in 1963). In 1963–1964, he helped establish IIT Kanpur’s Computer Center, convening a meeting of computing pioneers including Maurice Wilkes, Adriaan van Wijngaarden, and David Evans.

Huskey married Velma Roeth in 1939; they had four children. After her death in 1991, he married Nancy Grindstaff in 1994; she died in 2016. He lived in Santa Cruz. On May 10, 1950, he appeared with a junk dealer on Groucho Marx’s radio show *You Bet Your Life*, introduced as the designer of an “electronic brain.” They chose the state category but missed the final question, failing to name Iowa as the state north of Missouri.

In 1994, he was named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery. The Computer History Museum made him a Museum Fellow in 2013, citing his seminal work on early computing systems and a lifetime of service to computer education. Dag Spicer, a senior curator there, called him a “Zelig-like character, present at some of computing’s greatest moments.”
