Dave Smith (April 2, 1950 – May 31, 2022) was an American engineer who founded the synthesizer company Sequential. He is best known for designing the Prophet-5, the first polyphonic synthesizer with fully programmable memory, and for spearheading the creation of MIDI, the universal protocol that lets electronic instruments and audio gear sync up.
Born in San Francisco, Smith grew up playing piano at home and in college bands. He earned degrees in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering from UC Berkeley. After buying a Minimoog in 1972, he built his own analog sequencer and started Sequential Circuits in 1974, advertising it in Rolling Stone. By 1977 he was working full-time for the company, and later that year he designed the Prophet-5—the first microprocessor-based musical instrument and the first programmable polyphonic synth. Sequential became a leading synthesizer manufacturer.
In 1981, Smith set out to create a standard way for electronic instruments from different companies to communicate. He and Chet Wood presented a paper on a Universal Synthesizer Interface (USI) to the Audio Engineering Society that year, following meetings with Tom Oberheim and Roland’s Ikutaro Kakehashi. After revisions, the standard debuted as MIDI at the Winter NAMM Show in 1983, when a Sequential Prophet-600 successfully connected to a Roland Jupiter-6. In 1987, Smith was named a Fellow of the AES for his work in music synthesis. In 2005, he was inducted into the Mix Foundation TECnology Hall of Fame for MIDI. In 2013, he and Kakehashi received a Technical Grammy for their MIDI contributions. As of 2022, Smith’s original MIDI design was still in use.
After Sequential, Smith served as President of DSD, Inc., a Yamaha R&D division, where he worked on physical modeling and software synthesizers. In 1989, he started Korg’s California R&D group, which produced the Wavestation synthesizer. He later became president of Seer Systems and developed the world’s first software-based synthesizer running on a PC, commissioned by Intel and demonstrated by Andy Grove at a Comdex keynote in 1994. A second-generation version, licensed to Creative Labs in 1996, sold over 10 million copies and powered 32 of the 64 voices in Creative’s AWE 64 soundcards.
