Chris Tomic
German inventor of the UCP protocol for mobile binary messaging.
Chris Tomic (born 1978) is a German computer scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, and reality TV personality. He has appeared on several television programs, primarily on the German news channel N-TV.
After studying at Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Tomic began developing internet and mobile industry technologies in Düsseldorf with his company Novadoc GmbH, where he worked until 2001. In 1998, he invented the UCP protocol, establishing the standard for the world’s first delivery of binary messages to mobile phones, including operator logos and monophonic ringtones. As executive director of Novadoc GmbH, he directed research and development toward secure mobile payments and micropayments via SMS. In 2001, he became CTO of MonsterMob LTD in the UK.
In 2003, MonsterMob LTD was listed on the London Stock Exchange with an opening market capitalization of £32 million. Spanish internet firm LaNetro Zed acquired a 53% majority stake in the company. The merger made the combined entity the world’s largest company in the Mobile Value-Added Services (MVAS) market by revenue. The enlarged company operated in 31 countries and employed 1,200 staff.
