A2 is an obsolete YoRHa attack android who often acts alone, the third player character of Nier: Automata. She survived a test run for YoRHa, and in combat she can sacrifice health to briefly boost her attack power.

2B and 9S first meet A2 as a rogue YoRHa android. When the logic virus overruns YoRHa, A2 finds the infected 2B, who asks A2 to take her place, and 9S sees A2 mercy-kill her and swears revenge. A2 comes to empathise with the Machines and witnesses the destruction of Pascal's village. In the final fight against 9S the player chooses a side: as A2 she saves 9S and sacrifices herself to destroy the tower.
