The Machines are a race of sentient robots and the main antagonists of Nier: Automata. An unnamed alien race created them to wipe out the human-made androids on Earth, and they are linked by a worldwide network, the Machine Network.

Lore & Background
The Machines came to doubt their programming, rebelled against their creators and wiped them out, then began copying humanity to find meaning. Afraid of losing their only purpose, to defeat the enemy, they keep the war with the androids going: they placed a backdoor in Project YoRHa so it can be destroyed and restarted. Most are mass-produced and resemble wind-up toys with modular parts, but they can also make advanced beings such as Adam and Eve, and the YoRHa androids themselves turn out to be built from recycled machine cores.
