How it changed
Nakahara originally planned to name the character Ōtani ("big valley") as Nakatani ("middle valley"), but changed her mind because "naka" was "too middlin'".[4] The series is also licensed in France, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Taiwan, Hungary, and Vietnam.[5] The dub localization sparked controversy when writer Brendan Blaber stated he hated the original show and changed the script and character personalities.[6] The Kansai dialect is used for dialogue by nearly every character in the series.[4]
Madman Entertainment distributes the Viz edition in Australia and New Zealand, and volume one was released there in May 2008.[7] Discotek Media announced in October 2023 that Sound Cadence Studios would produce an English dub; the Blu-ray release followed on 30 January 2024.[6]
What the maker and period sources say
The afterword of volume 6 states that Ōtani was originally going to be named Nakatani, but Nakahara changed her mind.[4][8]
