How it changed
The meteorite impact caused Japan's climate to shift dramatically from the present day.[1] Sea levels have risen so much that downtown Yokohama is completely underwater.[1] A volcanic eruption of Mount Aso has split Kyūshū into two islands.[1] In the Kansai region, Fall group domesticates flightless birds and llama-like sheep.[2]
A desert with cactus scrub exists in southern central Honshū.[3] Large reptiles that revive during the rainy season have become the dominant predator from the south coast to Tokyo.[3] Within the Kansai area, the year consists of just two periods: a dry spell and a wet season that is both lengthier and more intense.[1] Among the novel threats that appear are groups of pale, meat-eating cockroaches and oversized Venus flytraps.[3]
Plants and animals not originally native to Japan, like banana trees and crocodiles, now flourish there.[3]
What the maker and period sources say
The manga was written and illustrated by Yumi Tamura and serialized in Bessatsu Shōjo Comic from November 2001 before moving to Flowers in April 2002.[4] Shogakukan collected the chapters into 35 volumes, with the first released on 26 March 2002 and the last on 10 August 2017.[5] An official fanbook titled Edge of Emotions was published on 9 December 2011, containing character profiles and an interview with Tamura.[5][6] On 26 November 2018, the anime adaptation was revealed; it was created by Gonzo under Yukio Takahashi's direction and became available globally on Netflix starting 28 June 2019.[7][8]
