Tokyo
The city both Nanas move to at twenty.
Nana is a manga series by Ai Yazawa that follows two young women, both named Nana, who meet while moving to Tokyo.[1] The series ran in Shueisha's Cookie magazine from 2000 until an indefinite hiatus in 2009 due to Yazawa's illness.[2][3] It has been adapted into two live-action films, an anime television series, and several video games.[4][5][6]
How it changed
Ai Yazawa created a two-part prologue for Nana in 1999 to accompany the launch of Shueisha's Cookie magazine.[7][3] The anime's producers stated in 2007 they would wait for the manga's conclusion before producing more material.[8] Because she had previously created a rockabilly character for her early work I'm No Angel, Yazawa opted to center a punk band in her new story.[7] Yazawa's personal admiration for the Vivienne Westwood label is reflected in the manga's frequent use of that brand.[7]
After 84 installments in Cookie, the manga stopped on May 26, 2009, when Yazawa became suddenly ill and the series entered an indefinite break.[2][9] At her 2022 art show, Yazawa stated she wished to resume the series when she was able.[2]
What the maker and period sources say
The same article noted that VIZ Pictures planned theatrical releases for Nana in early 2008 and Nana 2 in spring 2008.[1] An Anime News Network report from June 2009 stated that Cookie magazine's editorial department apologized to readers and confirmed Nana's return had not been scheduled.[9] That report also noted that Nana had previously been on hiatus from June to November 2007 due to another illness and operation.[9] A 2007 Anime News Network article reported that Nana had been part of Shojo Beat since the magazine's premiere issue and would be replaced by Honey and Clover after August.[10]
