Lore & Background

At the end of the Armageddon war only Raiden and Shao Kahn are left alive. Empowered after defeating Blaze, Kahn overpowers Raiden, who uses his shattered amulet to send his past self the message "He must win" before he is killed. Back at the first tournament, the younger Raiden sees visions of the future and decides that Liu Kang must win to save Earthrealm. He asks Scorpion to spare Bi-Han, the Sub-Zero of that time, in return for asking the Elder Gods to restore Scorpion's clan, but Quan Chi plants false visions of Sub-Zero massacring the Shirai Ryu and Scorpion's family, and Scorpion kills him anyway. Liu Kang beats Goro and Shang Tsung, yet Raiden's amulet cracks further. Shao Kahn spares Shang Tsung when the sorcerer proposes a second tournament in Outworld.
